Drew Peterson has a trial date. A Will County judge scheduled the trial of the former suburban Chicago police officer to begin in late July. Peterson is accused of killing his third wife. That case was re-opened after Peterson’s fourth wife vanished in 2007.
minimum wage
Lawmakers in Springfield pushed forward a plan to increase the state’s minimum wage. It could be months before it is implemented. The sponsor wants to raise the wage from 8.25 to 10 dollars an hour.
fraud couple
A former Peoria couple were indicted in federal court yesterday for failing to show up for sentencing on a fraud scheme 12 years ago. Nelson and Janet Hallahan were caught in Arizona after their faces were shown on America’s Most Wanted.

Half-naked people covered themselves in a black substance meant to look like oil during a demonstration Thursday outside the Canadian consulate in Chicago. About 100 environmental activists took part in the protest.

The Illinois Senate has denied Munir Muhammad another term on the Illinois Human Rights Commission. There is controversy about material on the website of a coalition he’s part of that includes a statement saying “race mixing” and interracial marriage should be prohibited.
boy killed
A 3-year-old Urbana boy died of a gunshot wound to the head in what investigators believe was an accident involving his 14 year old uncle. Mekhi Woods died Wednesday night.

The FBI has issued a warrant for Arnoldo Jimenez, whose new wife was found stabbed to death in the dress she wore to her wedding reception in Burbank, Illinois. Police have also asked Texas and U.S. border officials to join the hunt.
meth bust
Two people were indicted yesterday after police found them with a working meth lab in their motel room in East Peoria. Police found the toxic lab when they were sent to the Super 8 Motel to check on a disturbance.
post office
The U.S. Postal Service says it is shutting down its mail processing center in Bloomington, as part of a multi-billion dollar cust-cutting plan. The facility is slated to close some time this summer.
mini horses
Illinois may allow miniature horses as helpers for people with disabilities. The Illinois Senate yesterday approved mini horses as approved service animals in the state.
